As the day approaches for the inauguration of the exhibition and the launch of the book titled ‘AksharBharati’, I am filled with a great sense of joy and gratitude. Joy for the satisfying completion of yet another project, that showcases the grandeur of Indian scripts and a deep sense of gratitude towards each and every artist and expert, who have generously contributed their work and words to these projects. I have sincerely tried to build on the inspiring foundation laid down by my guru in the field, Late Prof. Shri R. K. Joshi, through initiatives like Aksharyoga, in the hope of passing the torch to the brilliant Indian calligraphers with the potential of elevating the artform and capably representing India in the world calligraphy arena.

AksharBharati is a platform that serves many purposes. Firstly, it is a medium to bring forth the uniqueness and magnificence of Indian scripts, their forms and variety before the world. It is also a dais for Indian calligraphers to exhibit their work. In a vast country like ours, calligraphers come from many states and a project like this offers an opportunity to know about and connect with their peers. The individual work of calligraphers is exceptional; but when they come together under the single umbrella, one can evidently see the pure artistic potential and the collective aesthetic strength of our scripts. Through the articles in the book, experts have shared their thoughts, ideas, their inspirations, adding a new dimension and providing new viewpoints of looking at the evolution of scripts, the tools, media and what the future should look like.
Each and every calligrapher has made this journey of exploring Indian letters from their origins in the undeciphered Indus Valley Scripts, the mother of Indian scripts Brahmi, the Kharosthi to the modern-day versions of prevailing scripts, very creative and inspiring with their paintings. In the exhibition you will be able to see beautiful calligraphic paintings in lesser-known scripts like Modi, Siddham, Jain Devanagari, Grantha, Sharada and many more. The book is an insight into the multi-language, multi-script nature of Bharat, through what I call ‘Aksharchitras’.

The world is taking notice of the beautiful Indian scripts and recognizing their potential. Their admiration is seen in events, projects held in countries USA, S.Korea, France, Russia, etc. Foreign nationals are eagerly learning Devanagari calligraphy and the curiosity as well as respect for our languages and literature is on a rise. I wish to create the same momentum in India. While attempting to document, preserve and advance Indian calligraphy, a beautiful and extraordinary aspect of our culture, I also want AksharBharati to inspire our own people and the Indian Diaspora connect with the languages, literature, scripts of their motherland. The reason I could study the ancient Modi script was that I received the right assistance and funding at the right time. If AksharBharati sheds light on importance of patronage of people and government for arts like calligraphy and the significance of maintaining and developing archives and museums dedicated to scripts, writing tools etc., I would consider a goal achieved.

I envision this initiative to become much more than a book and exhibition. It can become a travelling exhibition that visits states across India, highlighting the scripts and dialects of the state, showcasing the tools and media– both ancient and modern. I hope it inspires educators to introduce calligraphy to their students and artists to create more work.

So, visit the Exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai from 28th Jan to 3rd Feb 2025 from 11 am to 7 pm.
